busy hands, little work

Little, well maybe not so little work, I have been very busy just not posting, nor doing much needlework, quilting, or anything of that nature.

So what have I been doing? Well let's see: a trip to Canada to see my nephew graduate from university; back to the Appalachian Trail; off the AT; visited Ashville, NC; visited Blue Ridge, GA; back into the RV where we visited Little Rock, AR; then on to Panama; and now in Costa Rica; all the while I have started back to school online to obtain my MSN. Oh yes, I applied for a volunteer gig as a Nurse Practitioner in Somiland for this fall and also for another Peace Corps gig for next year. Phew!!!!! and here it is only the middle of July.

Father Frost: I am all done but the beard and the beads. I am not looking forward to the beard and as of today, it sits by my chair, waiting to be finished.
I got my pillow for the bed back when we returned to Texas. Sure adds some color to the light mint green of the covers and the pillows.
Then I finished up a donation quilt called "Will you be my friend?" I will wrap a teddy bear in it for a friend...

and add some washable markers to color the hearts or leaves, which ever they call them.
I treated the b&w fabric so that it can be colored and then washed out for multiple colorings. This was actually an experiment in this technique as I have some different b&w fabrics to make into donation quilts but I had to be sure it would work first.

Canada: I went from gorgeous sunny warm weather to snow and cold.
Apart from the amazing accomplishment of my nephew,
we traveled by motorhome into Saskatchewan where he was going to school. We stopped at a history museum and I found my new hummer:
We just thought things were bigger in Texas - How about an Ukrainian Egg and cowboy coffee.

Georgia: While visiting with friends we became reacquainted with Elliott. He opened his heart to us and then we left. The morning that we left he wouldn't say good morning, nor would he talk to us.Boy can he pout!
He wouldn't look at us as we left.
Then we finally got back in the coach. Seems like we had been gone for ever.
We parked on the river right in the middle of Little Rock, AR
We saw an immensely large statue of Christ We have seen one in Rio, Montana, Colombia, and now the Ozarks.
While in Ashville, NC I found a cute little knitting shop that sported the window theme of Star Wars (it was owned and operated by a young man in a kilt). Needles = light sabers...Darth Vader = black stocking doll...ObeeOneKinobi = stocking monkey
Here I bought 1200m of lace weight silk in a variegated pink to blue. I plan on hitting a lacey scarf to wear with jeans in the winter. And believe me, if things work out the way I would like them to, I will have lots of time to finish it.
Then on to Panama where we attended a 50 years of Peace Corps reunion. What fun. Our balcony overlooked the start of the Panama Canal giving us a constant view of shipping - drags, no cruise ships however.
Met old friends:
Surprise, Bob was on our bus!

 Diana

 Our "daughter" and her moms

 Danny, Shirley, Katie, Bob

going over the Bridge of the Americas
We saw a fiesta parade for John the Baptist, the patron saint for Chitre from our balcony
And then headed over to Volcán our old stomping grounds. Here I attended an exhibition in Boquette by the quilting group that we started. What a proud day to see how far they have come.

They got real creative with the local Ngöbe dress using cute children's cotton prints.
This is how they normally look. Two of the women in the quilting group who are doing very well.

This is but a sample of what was exhibited, and still there was even more to replace the sold items.
As one can see, not much done in the way of crafting but I have sure have had a great time with all of this "work".

Life is never predictable

We planned on spring weather, instead we got winter snows. With the snow storms we were shut down in Shenandoah Nat'l Park due to snow and cold weather so plans were changed. But as Danny hiked through the snow (until we were shut down) ...
stitching vista and the snow in Shenandoah National Park before the last snow storm...  The decision was made to go south and start at the southern terminus in Georgia. Now my vistas are finally turning green instead of brown.

and the flowers are coming out

I got to finish up the stitching on my baseball ornament (now it goes into the tube for storage until we gt back to the RV) With the fiasco of Miss Chrissy's fibers, I then joined another Yahoo group to stitch Father Frost. This is not Father Christmas although some of the group are actually doing him in red. Mine is being done in blue to portray the crispy, cold and sparkle of snow. He is fun to do and now, I am at his beard - oh my, not a favorite part to be for me.

I started and finished one of nine Christmas Crackers by Melissa Shirley. These are small fun projects that go quickly.

Finished

The next in the series will be done after I finish Father Frost.

I have finished another quilting UFO, Creepy Crawly Friends.

This allowed me to go back to the end of the list again in the Stashbuster's UFO Challenge. It was also completed during the second quarter so won't have to pay a penalty for this quarter. I have one UFO left in the car ready to complete but will wait until I am closer to the top of the list again before finishing it. That one is a small child's quilt to wrap around a teddy bear.

The stitching and sewing has been very slow; what with traveling so much and driving most of the traveling, I don't get all that much time to indulge. And now, it will even be worse - I am starting online university classes to complete my Masters. This will look real good on my next Peace Corps application, which will be done after the middle of this month.

And so we go forward, the trail continues to be a very good experience, my trip back to Canada was excellent, and now I am settling back into the routine ...

As I drive the AT

Chrissy Cleo meows as I drive the byways, the backroads, and the white-knuckle roads up into the Appalachian Mountains day in and day out. In my mind I can see her flashing eyes, but I am afraid that there is nothing that I can do. I forgot her threads so she simply won't get done this trip. Hopefully when I get back I will get her finished and off to the finishers before this coming Christmas. In fact, to simplify matters I took her off the frame - yes, I said off, and her eyes really sent messages - rolled her up and placed her in a tube. This is "for your own protection" - remember your mom saying that to you? - and will mail her back to the DIL's place to keep safe and clean. Traveling open like she was in the car left her in a bad position of getting her threads caught and pulled, dirt on her and all manner of happenings. Out of sight, but not out of mind.

While I was gathering small projects to bring with us to Mexico and then on the 6 month odyssey, I found a Santa pillow project that had been tucked in the suitcase from Panama. Perfect as it is tedious with many a colour here, a color there, and a multitude of colors that just aren't what one would expect. Obviously, not a favorite but an UFO is an UFO and it would be nice to get it finished and out of the suitcase of UFO's. I do a little, put it down, do a little, out it aside, all in the evenings after the days events or as in the case of Mexico, while riding on the bus long distances.

Supporting my husband on the AT means doing a lot of driving. It is too cold at this time for camping close to the trail so we drive distances to find a hotel and park for a few days before moving on. This means that, as I don't know exactly how long it will take hime to hike a certain area, I often sit for longish periods of time in the car. I also wait for a period of time after I drop him off to make sure he has everything that he needs, hasn't misjudged the trail of the weather. I pass my time by hiking/geocaching or needlework.

 A baseball ornament

Not having Chrissy CLeo to work on, I started another project that I brought out of the UFO pile: Golden Christmas Crackers. I had the stretcher bars with me so I eagerly got started. A few stitches at a time will add up over a few days to a finished #1 out of a total of 10 (1/10). I am finding that there are certain fibers that I don't really like working with but when finished, they do look so good. So here I will have to temper my feelings and open my mind to using something that I don't initially like.

A rainy day, no a downpour day, gave me the opportunity to drive a good distance to the closest LNS that I could find. Here I was able to replenish supplies to finish stitching the baseball project, find a new project that I have been lusting over for months, Broom Parking, and found a new fiber that will work into what I am about to start, Father Frost. I was unable to get the stretcher bars needed for Broom Parking so will have to order them and have them sent out, or maybe I will find another LNS close by. Will post photos here in a few days.

Today another day of snow/rain and a day for catching up on my blogging as well as doing some basic stitching on my new project, Father Frost.
